| When selecting an ESC for a boat: Decide if you want reverse, it will be rare that you will want to back-up since the water tends to flood into the boat, but it is used as a brake and small maneuvers. Manufacturer suggested (MFG) motor limit is based on car applications and they all have different limits on the same current maximums, what ever they suggest, you can go a little lower. What is important is the Maximum Continuous current limit and the Spike current limit. The motor determines the number of cells you plan to run, most of the motors best suited for boats can run 7 or more cells. A 100 amp forward/60 amp reverse ESC, can run a 16 turn motor with direct drive on a 28" Semi-Vee ABS Plastic Hull. We tried a 14 turn on the same boat and it blew the 40 amp fuse. The Dura Trax Streak is rated for 12 turn max, if you run two motors, your suppose to use some formula (turn + half) 12 + 6 = 18 turn max motors, then another formula if the motors are geared down, I don't know the formula, but I have run two 14 turns geared at 2:1 with this ESC. Traxxas XL-1 can run two 19 or 22 turn in-line motors. With single motor direct or geared applications, the motor you choose
will most likely establish the number of cells. The Graupner 700 can run
on 12 cells, an ESC than can handle this would be very expensive, I use
a mechanical micro switch style or single on/off switch. |
