Stinger by Great Planes

This is the older model of the same Shallow V hull that Great Planes has out now with the same Twin inline Thrustmaster 22-turn motors.
I purchased this boat from eBay for $55 with shipping, It's appearance was bad, but it did come with radio, I stripped it down and repaired minor damages to the hull.
Took several digital photos and designed the paint style on the computer before painting it.

I had gone through all the problem solving with a friends Stinger I put together.
We found the rudder was too small for the speed of this boat and the prop is held by pressure between two nuts, not much keeping it from slipping.
I can pretty much guarantee that the original speed control for these boats will fail in time, its amp draw on resistance, not voltage that will melt it, first time out with a new prop will probable do it.
The motor power is designed to for two batteries, parallel for low speed, series for high, go to the Controls & Wiring section of the web site, I have diagrams specific to the inline motor setups.

Shown is a XL-1 ESC, I drilled a hole through both heat sinks and inserted aluminum tubes for water cooling, I'm not sure it needed it, but it looks cool.

This set up is good for fun, but not for racing, I plan on removing the ESC and installing  a servo activated switch for the power system

Update:
The dual does not work well with an ESC, the motors have to be wired in series to get the performance they were designed for, sending 7.2v is half speed and 14.4v is full.

I have received a few emails about not finding a 1/8" drive dog.  Most hobby shops will order them for you. 3mm will work with 1/8", it's actually 3.175mm.
Go to the Links page and check out the Prop Shop, I know their prices are good for items like this.
You can sleeve a shaft, 5/16 OD brass tube is 4mm, drill a hole in the brass tube so the set screw from the drive dog can pass through it to the shaft, locking the tube and the drive dog to the shaft. The brass tube passes through the prop and is a hair short of the end so the lock nut will secure it. Getting a 1/8" drive dog is better and easier.

Kyosho Rudder

This is a great boat after these minor upgrades:

  • Rudder, I found the  Kyosho Rudder works great & the mounting holes in the hull match. $8.00 at Tower Hobbies.
  • Prop & Drive-dog, you will need to file a small flat spot on the shaft just in front of the threads for drive-dog, you can use the original nuts with lock-tight or get a SS locknut. $5
  • RC car body mount post for securing the hatch.
